Bauchi NDC governorship candidate resigns, may join APC

Mr Kashim, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), officially resigned from the NDC in a statement dated 16 October.

The governorship candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Bauchi State, Ibrahim Kashim, had resigned from the party.

In the statement, Mr Kashim disclosed that his decision came after careful reflection.

However, he said stepping down from the NDC does not diminish his commitment to advocating for political reform and socio-economic advancement in Bauchi State.

“Our conviction remains that our dear state deserves purposeful leadership, a stronger economy, greater opportunities for our youths and women, improved security, and a future in which every citizen can live with dignity and hope,” Mr Kashim stated.

He also assured his followers that the political movement remains active.

He said consultations were ongoing with relevant stakeholders and groups who share a common vision with him for a peaceful and prosperous Bauchi State.

He urged his supporters to remain calm, steadfast, and united, adding that details regarding the next phase of his political movement will be announced in due course.

Although Mr Ibrahim Kashim has yet to announce his next political move, speculation is mounting that he is likely to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr Kashim served as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) under current Governor Bala Mohammed, having been appointed to the role in June 2021.

He resigned in December 2024 amid the rift between Governor Mohammed and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

At the time, his departure—officially announced by the governor—fueled speculation that his allegiance lay with Mr Wike, ultimately prompting his exit from office.

Responding to the development, the Bauchi State Chairman of the NDC, Abdullahi Misau, said the party was disappointed and unhappy with the development.

“Honestly, we are not happy with this development. We are deeply disappointed, but since it is beyond our control, we can only pray that it turns out to be in the best interest of all parties involved.

“In politics, everyone seeks what they believe is best for them. Every individual has the right to choose their own path and decide how they want to contribute to society and the nation, while also pursuing their personal interests,” he said.

“Under the electoral framework, the governorship candidate and the running mate contest together. Since we have a running mate, it cannot be said that we are no longer in the race,” Mr Misau stated.

The chairman explained that the party would seek legal advice on the implications of the candidate’s resignation, including consultations with relevant legal authorities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“We will consult our legal team and seek guidance from INEC’s legal counsel on the appropriate steps to take. However, I can assure you that we are still in the race,” he added.

Mr Misau further assured party members and supporters that the NDC leadership would continue mobilising support across Bauchi State.
