The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, for allegedly posing as a medical doctor, operating an illegal mobile clinic and defrauding members of the public.
Police said the suspect was arrested by officers attached to the Uwanse Division in Calabar South following a complaint by Mrs Edemawan Samuel, who alleged that Ekpeme collected ₦500,000 from her after promising to secure employment for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect falsely presented himself as a medical doctor and used the claim to obtain the money under false pretences.
Investigators also recovered medical equipment and other exhibits believed to be linked to the alleged offences.
The Commissioner of Police in Cross River State has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the full extent of the suspect’s activities and establish whether other people may have fallen victim to the alleged scam.
Police said the suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court if investigations establish sufficient evidence against him.
The command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of impersonation and fraud to the nearest police station.
