The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, Ahmed Sanusi, has ordered the arrest and orderly room trial of four police officers accused of extorting the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, Dr. Musa Aliyu.
The officers were accused of abandoning their lawful duty posts to conduct an unauthorised traffic enforcement operation in the Maitama area of Abuja.
The Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, shortly after the Commissioner briefed journalists on recent operational successes recorded across the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on July 11 at about 3:34 p.m. when the four officers allegedly left their assigned duty posts and proceeded to the Banex Plaza Junction in Wuse II, where they mounted an illegal traffic checkpoint.
The officers, identified as ASP Clement Ehigala, ASP Sunday Okpe, Inspector Samuel Onoja and Sergeant Yakubu Emmanuel, allegedly stopped a motorist over an alleged traffic violation and extorted N52,000 from him.
The Command said the victim was later identified as the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Aliyu, who formally laid a complaint, after which the police commissioner ordered the immediate arrest of the officers and directed that they face orderly room trial.
According to the police, the officers are being investigated for abandoning their lawful duty posts, carrying out unauthorised traffic enforcement and engaging in the alleged extortion.
“The Command has commenced disciplinary proceedings against the officers in line with established police regulations, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and zero tolerance for misconduct by its personnel,” the statement said.
Speaking during Monday’s press briefing, the Commissioner said the action reflected the Command’s determination to discipline erring officers while rewarding professionalism.
He assured residents that misconduct by police personnel would not be tolerated, adding that officers found wanting would face appropriate sanctions in line with the law.
