Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu’s administration merely changed the name of the fuel subsidy to “Energy Security Expenses” while continuing to spend heavily on it.
In a statement shared publicly, Melaye claimed that the Federal Government spent ₦11.9 trillion under the “Energy Security Expenses” heading in 2023 and 2024 alone, arguing that the amount exceeds what the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari spent on fuel subsidy over eight years.
The former lawmaker also questioned the government’s continued borrowing despite the reported expenditure, criticizing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over its economic policies.
“Tinubu don change Fuel subsidy name to Energy Security Expenses, he spent ₦11.9 trillion in 2023 and 2024 alone. That is more than what Buhari Administration spent on subsidy for 8 years. APC is a criminal enterprise. With all this, Tinubu still dey borrow. Allah ya isa,” Melaye said.
The Presidency has not responded to Melaye’s claims.
