Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, Davido, has opened up about his strong sense of identity and cultural pride, revealing how he often disagreed with his American friends during his time in college.
Davido shared that while studying in the United States, many of his peers frequently referred to him as a US citizen.
However, Davido insisted on identifying as Nigerian, emphasising the importance of heritage and cultural roots in shaping identity, particularly within African communities.
According to Davido, his perspective is rooted in the belief that for many Africans, identity is defined not by place of birth but by lineage and parental origin. He explained that despite his exposure to life abroad, his connection to Nigeria remained unwavering.

“I used to argue with my American friends in college because they always wanted to call me a US citizen. But I kept telling them I’m a proud Nigerian instead… because for Africans, it’s where your parents are from, not where you were born,” he said.
Davido, who has consistently promoted Nigerian culture through his music, remains one of the leading figures in the global rise of Afrobeats.
