Few hours after a video of a man confronting officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Housing Monitoring and Compliance over permission to install solar, an X user has come forward to educate netizens bashing the government over such policy.
In a detailed thread, @Riddwane explained that the development in the viral video is true, but the man who cried out, appears to be misinformed about the Lagos State Government’s guidelines for installing solar energy systems, specifically in social housing estates.
The X user noted that the man is likely a tenant in one of the government-owned social housing estates. He would have signed an indemnity document when the apartment was handed over, which clearly outlined rules for alterations.

Importantly, the Lagos State Government does not charge all residents across the state for a permit to install solar power systems in their private homes. The administrative fees apply only to residents in government-owned social housing estates, where solar installation is treated as an “alteration” to the original building design.
“This is because the State Government maintains the facilities and public electricity infrastructure in these estates. Any alteration must be approved by the Physical Planning and Survey departments of the Ministry of Housing, and in shared areas, by the facility manager (Government), to ensure safety, material compliance, and post-inspection checks.”
The clarification has helped provide context to the viral outrage, emphasizing the need for proper sensitization on building regulations in public estates amid rising solar adoption in Nigeria.
