Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mary Njoku has sparked a conversation about how some men respond when their wives achieve greater financial success.
Taking to social media, Njoku observed that many women genuinely celebrate their partners’ achievements and often pray for their men to prosper. However, she noted that the same level of support is not always reciprocated when a woman becomes more successful than her husband.
According to the actress, some men may begin to feel emasculated, inadequate or disrespected when their wives start earning substantially more than they do.
Njoku stressed that a woman’s financial success should not be viewed as a threat to her husband’s position or self-worth.
She further maintained that a man who genuinely loves his wife should be able to celebrate her accomplishments without seeing them as a competition or allowing her success to diminish his confidence.
Her words
“Most women are genuinely happy when their man becomes very successful. In fact, many women pray for it. They want their husbands to win because they see his success as a win for the family.
But a lot of men struggle when the tables are turned.
When the woman starts earning significantly more, some men begin to feel emasculated, inadequate, or disrespected, even when she has done absolutely nothing to make them feel that way.
Suddenly, every little disagreement becomes, “It’s because you have more money than me.”
And that’s the real issue.
Sometimes the disrespect isn’t coming from the woman. It’s coming from the man’s own insecurity about what her success means about him.
So yes, I think this point is valid. A woman’s success should not make a man feel smaller. And a man who truly loves his woman should be able to celebrate her success without turning it into a competition.
