Electricity Subsidy Removal to Start in 2027, FG Assures Nigerians of No Immediate Tariff Hike

The Federal Government has announced plans to gradually phase out electricity subsidies starting in 2027 as part of ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this during a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, assuring Nigerians that the planned subsidy removal would not result in an immediate increase in electricity tariffs.

According to Tegbe, the government will steadily reduce subsidy payments while ensuring consumers continue to benefit from measures aimed at cushioning the impact of the reforms.

He also clarified that there are currently no plans to raise electricity tariffs, despite the proposed subsidy phase-out.

Nigeria’s electricity sector has long struggled with a funding gap caused by the difference between the actual cost of generating and distributing electricity and the amount power distribution companies recover from consumers

In other news… Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has commended Abia State Governor Alex Otti for his performance in office, despite belonging to different political parties.

Speaking at a recent event, Kalu acknowledged Otti’s achievements in the state, stating that good governance should be appreciated regardless of political affiliation.

According to him, Governor Otti has performed creditably since assuming office and has ensured that Abia remains safe.

“Even though we are not in the same political party, I must appreciate Governor Alex Otti for what he has done in Abia State. He has done very well and has kept Abia State safe.”

His remarks have sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians sharing differing opinions over the Deputy Speaker’s comments and what they could mean ahead of the 2027 elections.

Reacting, @MrEazi105419 wrote, “It’s looking like Tinubu has signed agreement that Otti will deliver Abia to him while he allows him have Abia for a second term. Otherwise, Kalu can never be this humble.  Politics in Nigeria is wild and weird at the same time.”

@TrendfusionNG commented, “This @OfficialBenKalu may be one of the South East’s smartest politicians. To realise that he was being deceived to run against Alex Otti is rare wisdom.”

@iykeinfos said, “Finally an APC politician, Honourable Benjamin Kalu, acknowledges the good work of a governor from another political party in Abia State. Alex Otti is him! Abia State has won the 2027 governorship election.”
