The Lagos State governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has vowed to bring to justice those he accused of unleashing “mayhem” on Lagosians.
Rhodes-Vivour made the statement on Friday while reacting to ..-mortem report issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on the death of Pelumi Onifade, a journalist with Gboah TV.
..-mortem report showed that Onifade died from massive blood loss in the abdominal cavity caused by a penetrating firearm injury to the abdomen.
Reacting to the report in a post on X, Rhodes-Vivour described Onifade’s death as “a sad and depressing end to a life full of promise.”
He said, “We will not forget those who, with their collaborators, unleashed mayhem and evil on innocent Lagosians.
“If I’m elected, i will bring all of them to justice.
“May the soul of Pelumi Onifade continue to rest in peace.”
The nine-page post-mortem report, signed on July 30, 2026, was submitted to the coroner investigating Onifade’s death.
According to a statement issued by Media Rights Agenda, ..-mortem examination was conducted at the LASUTH morgue on November 4, 2020, by consultant pathologist, Sunday Sokunle Soyemi, in the presence of supervising consultant, John Oladapo Obafunwa.
The report stated that the body examined was tagged No. 1385 and identified as that of Onifade through DNA analysis conducted by the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre.
The examination found a large quantity of blood in the abdominal cavity, which the pathologist said was consistent with a firearm injury involving the ricochet of the projectile.
The pathologist also found bone fragments embedded in the soft tissue of the abdomen, which was consistent with a penetrating firearm injury.
The report indicated that the projectile travelled from the back towards the front, from the right side towards the left and from the lower part of the body towards the upper part.
The pathologist also found no external evidence of significant natural disease in the body.
Onifade was reportedly taken away by police officers attached to the Lagos task force on October 24, 2020, while covering the #EndSARS protests in the Agege area of Lagos. He’s believed to have been extrajudicially killed by security operatives.
Days later, Gboah TV announced that his body had been discovered at a mortuary in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.
On July 19, 2024, the Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the state government to conduct a coroner’s inquest to ascertain the cause of Onifade’s death and identify and prosecute those responsible.
The coroner’s inquest has been adjourned until October 6, 2026.
