Enugu Governor Demands Impartial Investigation Into Attacks Against Opposition

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has demanded an impartial investigation into a shooting that left one person injured in Enugu last Saturday.

THE WHISTLER reported that the incident occurred at the state secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress. While NDC claimed that one person died, the state, through is Secretary to the State Government, Prof Chidiebere Onyia, said nobody died. According to him, the victim is alive and responding to treatment at the hospital.

Gov Mbah, in a statement addressed to the people of Enugu State, expressed concern over the violence surrounding recent political gatherings. He insisted that anyone found responsible would face the law regardless of political connections.

Mbah stated that his government had already made its position clear concerning allegations of government involvement in the incident.

According to him, “I am deeply concerned by the reports of violence surrounding the recent political gathering in Enugu, particularly the shooting that left a citizen injured.”

He charged the police to conduct a thorough investigation to unravel those behind the violence.

According to him, “In furtherance of our preliminary findings regarding the incident, I expect the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. Anyone found responsible for these acts will be held accountable through the proper legal process, regardless of their political connections.”

Mbah sympathised with the injured victim, his affected families and other casualties of the mayhem. He affirmed that every citizen, irrespective of political affiliation, must be allowed to exercise their political rights without intimidation or violence.

The governor assured the residents of adequate security, upholding the law and ensuring justice without favour remained his administration’s responsibilities.

Meanwhile, the governorship candidate of NDC in the state, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, has maintained that contrary to claims that NDC did not get permission to make use of the facilities at the Akanu Ibiam Airport on Saturday, the party fulfilled all the obligations. Recall that NDC faithful were halted from holding a rally to welcome Ohaa at the airport on Saturday.

Ohaa’s media aide, Sampson Ukwu, said in Enugu on Tuesday that “we paid all the dues, as well as got clearances from security agencies”.

He accused the state government of not not tolerating opposition, as well as failure to address escalating political violence in the state.
