European Union leaders agreed on Thursday (June 18) to renew sanctions against Russia over its war against Ukraine for another 12 months, a spokesperson for the chair of the meeting said.
Thursday’s decision at a summit in Brussels marked the first time such sanctions – which target certain sectors of the Russian economy – have been renewed for a year. They had previously been rolled over every six months.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The EU and its Western allies have imposed multiple rounds of sanctions aimed at limiting Moscow’s ability to finance the war and procure critical technologies in the last few years.
