European Lawmakers Petition FIFA to Investigate Infantino Over Trump Peace Prize

Fifty members of the European Parliament have petitioned FIFA’s ethics committee to investigate President Gianni Infantino for awarding a peace prize to US President Donald Trump.

The lawmakers signed a letter supporting a complaint by sports advocacy group FairSquare, which questions whether the decision was made unilaterally by Infantino or by the FIFA Council.

The letter, dated June 29, states that FIFA’s code of ethics requires Infantino to “remain politically neutral.” The MEPs also criticised FIFA’s links with Saudi Arabia and the recent sponsorship deal with Aramco.

The lawmakers called it “an opportunity for FIFA to prove its commitment to political neutrality, transparency, and accountability.”

Key Points:

Infantino faces scrutiny over political neutrality and transparency
The complaint echoes 2015 calls that led to Sepp Blatter’s resignation
FIFA’s links with Saudi Arabia and Aramco are also under fire
Norway is the only member federation to join the criticism so far
The outcome could reshape FIFA’s governance and reputation

FIFA’s ethics committee must now decide whether to investigate. The case could have significant implications for Infantino’s leadership.
