The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting it plans to increase electricity tariffs, with the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, stating that the Tinubu administration has no policy to raise electricity tariffs beyond the current level.
The clarification was made on Saturday in a statement shared by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on his X account.
According to Tegbe, the government’s immediate focus is on improving electricity supply, expanding metering, and ensuring consumers are only billed for the power they actually use.
“There is no policy by this administration to increase electricity tariffs beyond its current level. Our priority is not tariff increase in the immediate term,” the minister said.
“Our priority is service improvement, universal metering and ensuring Nigerians pay only for the electricity they actually consume.”
Tegbe added that the Federal Government would continue to explore measures aimed at protecting vulnerable electricity consumers while strengthening the financial sustainability of the power sector.

“Indeed, the Federal Government will continue to examine additional mechanisms for protecting vulnerable consumers whilst simultaneously improving the financial sustainability of the market,” he said.
The minister stressed that the ongoing reforms in the electricity sector are focused on practical implementation rather than rhetoric.
“Resetting the sector is not about buzz words. It is about execution, discipline, coordination, measurable outcomes. We will measure our outcomes by improvements experienced in the daily lives of Nigerians,” Tegbe stated.
He also outlined the administration’s long-term vision for the power sector, saying the goal is to deliver reliable, competitive, sustainable and inclusive electricity across the country.
“Our ambition is clear. Reliable electricity that powers our homes. Competitive electricity that powers our industries. Sustainable electricity that attracts investment. Inclusive electricity that reaches every Nigerian,” he added.
