Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has described his Commonwealth Games gold medal triumph in the men’s shot put as a reward for years of perseverance after overcoming a career-threatening injury.
Speaking after securing the title, an emotional Enekwechi admitted he never imagined the moment would become reality.
“I didn’t think it was possible,” he said.
The Nigerian thrower revealed that there were moments when he came close to walking away from the sport after suffering a serious injury that threatened to end his career.
However, Enekwechi said his determination to keep fighting eventually paid off, culminating in one of the biggest achievements of his athletics career.

“I never gave up, and sometimes persistence pays off. Today is proof of that,” he said.
