The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, has urged the Federal Government to sustain investment in women’s football following the outstanding performance of Nigeria’s U-17 female team, the Flamingos, on the international stage.
In a statement on Sunday, the Ogun State Chapter of the association said the team’s display of courage and discipline was proof of the talent and potential of the Nigerian girl-child when given opportunity and support.
The Chairperson, Morenikeji Sobaloju, said the achievement goes beyond football, noting that sustained investment in female participation in sports remains a tool for promoting gender equality, building confidence and empowering young women.
NAWOJ commended the Federal Government and the National Sports Commission for efforts to reposition the sports sector, but urged authorities to go beyond celebration.
The association called for improved facilities, adequate welfare for athletes and coaches, and increased funding for grassroots sports in schools and communities where many talented girls remain undiscovered.
It also urged the media to give female athletes consistent coverage, not only when they record major victories.
“The Flamingos have once again demonstrated that talent is abundant in Nigeria. What is required is a deliberate and sustainable system that discovers, nurtures and rewards such talent.
“NAWOJ, Ogun State Chapter, therefore calls for increased investment in grassroots sports development, particularly in schools and communities, where many talented young girls remain undiscovered due to inadequate facilities, limited funding and insufficient institutional support,” the statement added.
