Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Oby Kechere, popularly known for her role as Ms Koi Koi in the 2002 comedy movie Aki na Ukwa, has passed away after battling a prolonged illness. She died on April 27, 2026.
Her death was confirmed by Uche Agbo, National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), in a statement released on Saturday. Agbo described the late actress as a dedicated professional whose contributions to the guild and the Nigerian film industry were invaluable.
According to him, Kechere served as the Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter and played an important role in strengthening the guild’s unity and growth, especially within the Abuja chapter.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere, Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter,” Agbo said.
He noted that her passion, dedication, and commitment to the entertainment industry would continue to be remembered by colleagues and admirers.
Kechere studied Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan and began her acting career in 2001. Before rising to national prominence with her performance in Aki na Ukwa, she featured in several “August Meeting” films that showcased her versatility as an actress.
A native of Mbaise in Imo State, Kechere was widely respected for her talent, professionalism, and enduring impact on Nollywood.
The DGN president extended condolences to her family, friends, and industry colleagues, praying for the peaceful repose of her soul.
