A woman has shared a deeply distressing account of alleged family conflict following her father’s death, claiming that his relatives not only took possession of his belongings but also subjected her mother and siblings to repeated harassment.
The story, which surfaced on social media this week, has sparked widespread reactions and renewed conversations around inheritance disputes, widow protection and family violence in Nigeria.
According to her, the situation began shortly after her father passed away when his extended family allegedly moved in to take control of all properties and personal items, leaving her immediate family without support.
She said tensions escalated quickly, forcing them into a cycle of intimidation, fear and eventual displacement from the family home.
Family dispute turns into alleged harassment
“When my dad died, his family took every single thing that belonged to him, down to his slippers. My paternal grandma would constantly harass my mum and tell her to leave the house because she does not have a penis beside her vagina. She said the only reason she tolerated my mum was because of her son, and since he is dead, she had no reason to tolerate her anymore,” she said.
Forced relocation and identity change
“My uncle once chased me with a machete. He also poured my mum’s food meant for selling into the gutter. My mum’s leg almost got amputated after an accident on the day she went house hunting. It became too much for us to bear,” she added.
She explained that the family eventually left the home for safety reasons and later changed surnames to distance themselves from the painful experience and rebuild their lives. Similar inheritance disputes reported in Nigeria in 2023 have often escalated into legal battles and police cases, highlighting ongoing gaps in family property protection.
