United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has dismissed widespread social media reports claiming that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has separated from his wife, describing the allegations as false, malicious, and defamatory.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the bank’s Group Head of Brand, Marketing, and Corporate Communications, Alero Ladipo, said the claims were entirely fabricated and deliberately circulated to mislead the public while tarnishing the reputation of its chairman.
UBA also confirmed the arrest of three individuals allegedly connected to the creation and spread of the false publication. The suspects were identified as Kingsley Akunemeihe, Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue.
The bank stated that investigations are ongoing and may lead to further arrests and prosecution of others involved in originating or amplifying the defamatory content.
UBA warned individuals, platforms, and organisations involved in publishing or sharing the false claims to immediately cease dissemination, remove the content from all platforms, and preserve all related digital records, including communications and metadata, pending possible legal action.
The institution further cautioned that failure to comply would attract legal consequences, including lawsuits for defamation, injunctive relief, and damages.
Reaffirming its stance, UBA said it remains committed to protecting its brand integrity and the personal reputation of Mr. Elumelu, adding that it will pursue all necessary civil and criminal actions to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
