The number of people killed in Israel’s assault on Gaza since October 2023 has surpassed 73,000, the Gaza health ministry said on Sunday.
The updated toll on Sunday came as Israel has continued to strike in violation of a “ceasefire” that was supposed to have been observed since October.
Confirmation came from Zaher al-Waheidi, head of the ministry’s records department, and Hamza Salem from the ministry’s public relations department.
The total number of deaths since the beginning of the war is now 73,001.
On Sunday, the ministry said, there were five deaths: two in the southern city of Khan Younis and one in central Gaza, in addition to two who died of earlier wounds.
Israel’s genocidal attack on the territory has wounded 173,200 people since 7 October 2023, when the Hamas-led attack in Israel triggered the war.
The health ministry says women and children make up around half of all fatalities.
An Israeli strike on Saturday evening killed two Palestinians in Khan Younis. The casualties were taken to Nasser hospital, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The ceasefire deal brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the US in October ended full-scale military operations and led to the return of all the remaining captives.
But Israel has refused to observe the ceasefire and has continued daily attacks across Gaza. Its forces have gradually expanded their control, seizing another 10 percent of the territory.
Hamas has refused to discuss disarming until Israel complies with the terms of the ceasefire.
