The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN), has called for stronger collaboration among governments, anti-corruption agencies, civil society organisations, the private sector, the media and citizens to strengthen integrity and scale up anti-corruption efforts across Africa.
Aliyu made the call at the commemoration of the African Union Anti-Corruption Day in Abuja, saying collective action is critical to promoting transparency, accountability and the rule of law across the continent.
Citing findings of the 2025 Commonwealth Africa Anti-Corruption Centre study, he said 80 per cent of respondents across 14 African countries believe corruption occurs frequently, while lack of integrity remains one of its major drivers.
He said the ICPC continues to pursue its mandate through enforcement, prevention and public education, while partnering Ministries, Departments and Agencies to strengthen institutional integrity and block opportunities for corruption.
The ICPC chairman also highlighted youth-focused initiatives, including anti-corruption lectures for National Youth Service Corps members, Integrity Clubs in secondary schools and partnerships with universities and the Nigerian Law School to promote ethical values.
In a keynote address delivered on behalf of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Federal Government described corruption as a major obstacle to development, saying it deprives government of resources, weakens institutions, fuels insecurity and erodes public trust.
Represented by the Director of the Solicitors Department, Gladys Odegbaro, the Attorney-General said the Tinubu administration remains committed to strengthening public institutions, improving transparency, enhancing inter-agency collaboration and deploying technology to curb corruption in public service.
The event featured goodwill messages from anti-corruption and governance organisations, a panel discussion on promoting integrity across Africa and a presentation on the Whistleblower and Witness Protection Bill.
