Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi, a lawmaker representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, has called for drastic measures to address the rising insecurity in the country, news.ng reports.
Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary on the floor of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Ningi attributed the continued insecurity to political activities in the affected parts of the country.
He said, “Mr President, we cannot continue to think because we are in Abuja and therefore this does not affect us. It has affected us.”
He, therefore, proposed that all political activities in the troubled states in the North be suspended until there is headway in the fight against insecurity.
According to him, “One of the things that we must do, and I want us to take this very very serious, is either to suspend all political activities across this country, or look at the front line states of Borno, of Plateau, Bauchi, Benue, Niger, Sokoto, Kebi, and part of Kano, and suspend all political activities until we are sufficiently certain that these security issues we are dealing with.”
He lamented that the government is not doing enough to address the situation, following the killing of a Major General, and called for a renewed approach.
“We are not dealing with these security issues at all, and I’m not blaming anybody. I am saying we are not doing it. We cannot every time come here and lament. Mr President, the major general that was killed, a refined officer, that was imported from Pakistan back to Nigeria, and he was just slaughtered, and we are just looking, a major general, a colonel, a brigadier general, a captain, and that has become continuously seen.
“I think we are not doing enough, and we must do sufficiently enough to tell Nigerians we are the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
