Iraqi Airways resumes direct flights to Iran after sanctions waiver

Iraqi Airways, Iraq’s national carrier, has resumed direct flights to Iran, with its first flight operating from Najaf International Airport to Tehran on Thursday.

The airline said in a statement that the schedule included daily flights linking Najaf with major Iranian cities, including Tehran, Mashhad and Isfahan.

It said the resumption followed the completion of the necessary technical and regulatory requirements.

The development follows the resumption of direct air travel between Iraq and Iran on Sunday, when Najaf International Airport received a flight operated by Iran’s Caspian Airlines.

The flight operated under an official agreement between Baghdad and Washington that granted specific exemptions for the routes.

Najaf International Airport suspended flights to and from Iran on Sept. 25 following sanctions imposed by the U.S. Treasury Department on Iran’s aviation sector.
