Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has said Ndigbo should be allowed to freely choose who they want to vote for in the 2027 elections.
Onaiyekan made the statement while responding to comments by Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo on how the people should use their votes ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The Cardinal said he was not certain about exactly what Soludo had told Ndigbo but insisted that voters should be allowed to make their own choices at the polls.
“I don’t know what Soludo has told the Ndigbo. All I can say is that the Ndigbo should be allowed to freely choose who should be their president and governors,” he said.
Onaiyekan also said governors should not direct citizens on who to vote for, noting that elected officials would also have the opportunity to cast their own ballots.
“It’s not the duty of governor to teach, to tell people how they should vote. The governors will have their own votes now. Every governor will be able to vote. Will vote for himself. Let others do.”
He stressed that elections provide citizens with an opportunity to express their preferences and urged voters to make use of it.
“At least that’s the only opportunity that we have to express our mind. Let us do it.”
Onaiyekan has previously called for Nigerians to be allowed to freely choose their leaders and urged stakeholders to protect the integrity of the 2027 electoral process.
