Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State on Monday conducted a surprise inspection of the state secretariat in Dutse, where he reportedly found several offices of top government officials locked as late as 11 a.m., with many senior civil servants yet to report for duty.
The unannounced visit, which has since sparked reactions after a video of the exercise surfaced online, saw the governor move through various ministries to assess staff attendance, punctuality and workplace productivity.
During the inspection, many offices were deserted, while only a few messengers and security personnel were seen at their duty posts.
Confirming the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, the Governor’s Special Assistant, Garba Muhammad, said the inspection formed part of Namadi’s broader statewide oversight aimed at strengthening accountability and improving public service delivery.
According to him, the governor’s visit to the secretariat was designed to evaluate workers’ punctuality and reinforce discipline across the state civil service.
“The day’s activities commenced with an unannounced visit to the Jigawa State Secretariat Complex in Dutse, where the Governor monitored staff attendance, punctuality and workplace productivity.
“The exercise reflects his administration’s continued drive to promote discipline, accountability and an efficient public service,” Muhammad said.
Following the inspection, Namadi proceeded to Ringim Local Government Area, where he sympathised with families affected by the recent boat mishap at Malamawar ‘Yan Dutse community.
The governor participated in funeral prayers for victims whose bodies had been recovered, while search efforts continued for others still missing.
He also paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Ringim, offering prayers for the repose of the deceased and comfort for the bereaved families.
The governor later inspected ongoing township road projects in Sankara and the Kanya Babba road before moving to Kazaure, where he assessed the progress of key infrastructure projects, including hospitals, the Jigawa State Research Institute and the Jigawa State Polytechnic for Communication and Information Technology.
Muhammad said the statewide tour underscored the governor’s commitment to close monitoring of government programmes, improved service delivery and the timely execution of development projects across the state.
