Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has turned down an offer to become the new head coach of the Italian national team.
The 55-year-old communicated his decision to the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) after considering the proposal this week.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on Friday, saying Guardiola had decided against taking charge of the Azzurri as he intends to spend more time away from football.
Romano wrote on X: “Pep Guardiola says no to Italian national team head coach job offered by the Federation.”
He added: “Guardiola considered the proposal this week but wants to dedicate time to his family, recharge and return into football later on.”
The decision brings an end to Italy’s ambitious pursuit of the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager, who stepped away from Manchester City after a demanding decade in charge.
Guardiola reportedly wants to prioritise spending time with his family and recharge before considering a return to management.
The Spaniard was also said to favour the day-to-day involvement that comes with club management and was reluctant to commit fully to an international role operating on a part-time calendar.
Reports also indicated a financial gap between the parties, with Italy proposing an annual salary of €10 million while Guardiola’s valuation was around €20 million, although negotiations did not progress deeply into contract terms.
The FIGC had made a significant push to secure Guardiola, with technical director Paolo Maldini and adviser Leonardo holding a face-to-face meeting with him in Barcelona.
Italy’s plan was for Guardiola to oversee an overhaul involving the country’s senior and youth football structures.
However, his rejection means the federation must now turn its attention elsewhere ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures.
Carlo Ancelotti has also rejected the Italy role as he remains focused on the Brazil national team.
Andrea Pirlo, Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte have emerged as the leading alternatives being considered for the Azzurri job.
