The Super Eagles of Nigeria have sparked backlash on social media after sending a congratulatory message to Spain following their victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19, to emerge as the new world champions.

Reacting to Spain’s victory, the Super Eagles congratulated the European side and declared that Nigeria would meet the new champions in 2030.
The team wrote: “Congratulations to Spain on winning the 2026 #FIFAWorldCup. See you in 2030.”
The post quickly went viral, with many Nigerians criticising the national team over its remark, pointing out that the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
