Britain’s King Charles III is set to host executives from some of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies this week to discuss how the rapidly advancing technology can be developed safely and used for the benefit of society.
The meeting, to be held at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland, will bring together senior executives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as Britain’s minister for artificial intelligence.
The gathering comes days after two researchers at Anthropic warned that artificial intelligence could potentially pose an existential threat to humanity if its development is not carefully managed.
Anthropic’s chief executive, Dario Amodei, has also previously called for greater caution over the pace of AI development.
Buckingham Palace said discussions would focus on how artificial intelligence could be used for good, strengthen communities and improve lives, contributing to what it described as “the flourishing of both people and the planet.”
King Charles has previously used his position to bring together stakeholders to discuss issues he considers urgent, particularly climate change during his time as Prince of Wales.
The palace said the AI gathering would follow a similar approach.
Britain has sought to position itself as a major global centre for artificial intelligence, while taking a less restrictive approach to regulation than the European Union.
