A tricycle rider identified simply as IK has allegedly beaten his partner to death and abandoned her lifeless body alongside their two young children in a tricycle in Port Harcourt.
The incident, which occurred along CPM Street in Ogbogoro Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, has thrown residents into shock and grief.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the suspect allegedly assaulted the woman late Monday night at a guest house, inflicting fatal injuries on her before attempting to move her body.
A resident, who identified himself as Senibo, said neighbours were alerted early Tuesday morning after the disturbing discovery of the woman’s corpse inside a parked tricycle, with her two children—aged about five years and six months—beside her.
According to him, the matter was promptly reported to the police at the Ozuoba Division.
“The older child narrated that their father beat their mother with an object during the night. When she became weak, he put her in the tricycle with them and fled,” the source said.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Grace Iringe-Koko, said officers responded to a distress call from a passerby who noticed the victims in the tricycle.
She disclosed that upon arrival, the woman was found motionless, while the children were rescued.
Iringe-Koko added that the five-year-old child provided useful information on how the suspect allegedly attacked their mother before attempting to take her to a hospital, where she was later confirmed dead.
“The suspect abandoned the children at the scene and fled,” she said.
The police spokesperson noted that the deceased’s body has been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
She added that the children have been taken into protective custody and handed over to a relative, while the deceased’s family has been contacted.
The incident has further raised concerns over rising cases of domestic violence in the state, with residents calling for swift justice.
