A Kaduna man, Bilyaminu Idris, has taken his former fiancée’s father to a Shariah Court over an alleged failure to refund the outstanding N70,000 from a dowry paid for a marriage that was later cancelled.
Idris filed the case against Alhassan Dayyabu on Monday before the Shariah Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna, seeking an order compelling him to pay the outstanding balance.
The complainant told the court that he had paid N220,000 as dowry in preparation for marrying Dayyabu’s daughter, but the marriage was subsequently cancelled.
He said the defendant refunded N150,000 and promised to pay the remaining N70,000.
According to Idris, Dayyabu had made repeated promises to settle the balance over five months but failed to do so.
“He kept making empty promises on paying the balance for five months but failed. I pray the court to compel him to pay me the money,” he said.
In response, Dayyabu admitted that he owed Idris the N70,000 balance but asked the court for more time to raise the money.
The presiding judge, Malam Mu’awiyah Shehu, adjourned the case until November 26 to allow the defendant to pay the outstanding amount.
