A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member has sparked reactions online after expressing frustration over the rising cost of living in Abuja, particularly the increasing prices of food items.
In a video shared on social media, the corps member lamented the high cost of tomatoes, claiming that ₦500 could only buy five pieces at a local market.
According to the corper, the experience left her shocked and struggling to cope with the daily cost of feeding in the Federal Capital Territory.
She further complained that her monthly allowance, popularly known as “allawee,” is being consumed almost entirely by food expenses, leaving little or nothing for savings or other needs.
The visibly frustrated corps member described serving in Abuja as financially challenging, citing the rising cost of basic necessities.
Speaking in the video, she said:
“Guys what exactly is happening in Abuja that I don’t know?! I’m just coming back from the market where I went to get stuff to cook. Guys tomatoes 500 was just 5 pieces. Does it mean that each tomato is 100 Naira? You guys are not making life easy for Corpers in Abuja.
My only mistake was to come and serve in Abuja. I don’t even have any savings anymore. All my allawee has finished on food and I have to eat of course, I’m tired I wan go back village….”
The video has since gone viral, with many Nigerians sharing similar experiences and concerns over the increasing cost of food and living expenses across the country.
