Singapore has unveiled a new child support package that will provide every eligible Singaporean child with about S$70,000 in direct government support from birth to age 17, equivalent to roughly ₦74 million at current exchange rates. The initiative is part of the government’s response to declining birth rates and aims to provide families with stronger financial support throughout a child’s early years.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced the new SG Child Support Package during his National Day Rally speech on August 23, saying the government wanted to make family support simpler and more substantial rather than continue with a complex system of different benefits based on birth order.
The new package itself is worth up to S$62,000 per child. It includes a S$10,000 Baby Gift, S$32,000 in Child Credits, a S$5,000 Child Development Account grant, up to S$5,000 in government CDA co-matching and a S$10,000 top-up to the child’s Post-Secondary Education Account at age 17.
When existing benefits are included, such as the S$5,000 MediSave Grant for Newborns and annual Edusave contributions, total direct government support rises to around S$70,000 per child.
Under the new arrangement, the S$10,000 Baby Gift will be paid in two instalments within the first year after birth. Children will also receive S$2,000 annually from age one until 16 through Child Credits. At 17, they will receive another S$10,000 in their Post-Secondary Education Account.
The government said the package will provide the same level of support to every Singapore citizen child regardless of birth order. The new system is scheduled to begin from April 2027, with transitional arrangements for children already covered by existing schemes.
The announcement comes as Singapore continues to grapple with low fertility and concerns over the country’s ageing population. Wong said the government was willing to commit significant resources because supporting families throughout different stages of life remains a national priority.
The development has also sparked reactions from Nigerians online, with some joking about how such a policy could affect the country’s already high birth rate.
