The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has constituted a 12-member Aircraft Accident Investigation Board to determine the cause and circumstances of the crash involving its ATR 42 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State.

According to a statement on Tuesday by its Director of Public Relations and Information, Ehimen Ejodame, the Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Aneke, directed sustained search and recovery operations alongside a comprehensive investigation into the crash.

It said the investigation board will be headed by F.O. Ankeli, an air vice marshal, will serve as the president of the 12-member Aircraft Accident Investigation Board. It added that E.O.E. Ebiowe, who led the Investigation and Recovery Team, will coordinate the wider response.

The board comprises personnel with expertise in aviation operations, flight safety, piloting, air traffic control, aircraft engineering, maintenance and medical services, among other relevant disciplines. Representatives of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau are also included to provide civilian aviation expertise.

“The Board is mandated to examine relevant operational, technical, environmental, human and organisational factors surrounding the accident. Its work will involve the systematic examination, documentation and preservation of relevant evidence to establish the facts and determine the immediate and underlying causes or the occurrence,” the statement read.

It also noted that the board would make evidence-based recommendations to address any deficiencies identified, strengthen aviation safety and reduce the risk of similar accidents.

“Beyond the operational and investigative response, the NAF remains committed to supporting the bereaved families through this difficult period,” it added.

The NAF acknowledged public interest in the investigation and pledged to provide updates as verified information becomes available. However, it cautioned against drawing conclusions about the cause of the crash before the investigation is completed.

“Conclusions regarding the cause of the accident would be premature until the investigation is completed and its findings are duly considered,” the statement said.
