The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged students across the country to actively participate in politics, stressing that government policies have a direct impact on their education, welfare and future.
In a statement, the National President of NANS, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, said it was misleading to discourage students from engaging in political activities, noting that decisions made by government affect every aspect of their lives.
“It is important for every Nigerian student to understand that government policies directly affect our education, welfare, and future. Any attempt to deceive students into believing that they should not be involved in politics is misleading,” he said.

According to Afeez, politics goes beyond politicians, as it determines policies on tuition, student loans, scholarships, infrastructure, security and employment opportunities.
“Politics is not just about politicians; it is about the decisions that shape our daily lives. From tuition policies and student loans to scholarships, infrastructure, security, and employment opportunities, every government decision has a direct impact on us. That is why students must not remain mere spectators—we must be active participants in shaping the future of our nation,” he added.
The NANS president called on all Nigerian students aged 18 years and above to register and obtain their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs), describing voting as a vital civic responsibility.
“I therefore call on every Nigerian student who is 18 years and above to register and obtain a valid Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC). Your vote is your voice, and your voice is your power,” he said.
He urged students to reject political apathy and take advantage of the democratic process to influence the country’s future.
“Let us rise above apathy, participate in the democratic process, and vote for the future we desire. The future of Nigeria belongs to us, and we must play our part in building it,” Afeez stated.
