Nigeria has dropped to 90th position in the latest Henley Passport Index, with holders of the Nigerian passport enjoying visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 44 destinations.
The July 2026 ranking by Henley & Partners placed Nigeria 90th out of 199 passports, a one-place decline from its 89th position in the April 2026 edition, although its visa-free score remained unchanged at 44 destinations.
According to the global ranking, Singapore retained the world’s most powerful passport with visa-free access to 192 destinations, followed by Japan with 188, while South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Sweden shared third place with access to 187 destinations.
Among African countries, South Africa ranked highest at 49th globally with access to 101 destinations, followed by Botswana in 61st place with 81 destinations. Morocco ranked 67th, Kenya 68th and Ghana 70th.
Nigeria shared the 90th position with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Turkmenistan, while Afghanistan remained the world’s weakest passport with visa-free access to 22 destinations.
Henley & Partners said the index ranks 199 passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without obtaining a visa in advance, using data from the International Air Transport Association.
