President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay increases ranging from 30% to 80% depending on rank.
The approval, announced on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, will take effect from September 1 and is expected to benefit about 250,000 military personnel across the country.
Under the new structure, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30% salary increase. Personnel from Colonel to Warrant Officer will get a 50% raise, while soldiers from Private to Staff Sergeant will enjoy the highest increase of 80%.
The adjustment will raise the military’s annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
According to Onanuga, President Tinubu approved the salary review in recognition of the sacrifices and bravery of troops fighting banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across the country.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel by providing modern weapons, advanced technology and other equipment needed to strengthen national security.
Tinubu urged members of the armed forces to see the pay increase as a token of the nation’s appreciation for their service, expressing confidence that Nigeria would overcome those threatening the country’s peace and security.
