The Federal Government has dismissed reports claiming that electricity tariffs will soon be increased, insisting that there are currently no plans to raise tariffs for any category of grid consumers.
This was disclosed in an official statement shared on X on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Power Infrastructure in the Office of the Vice President, Sadiq Wanka.
According to Wanka, recent media reports misrepresented comments he made earlier in the week regarding ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.
He clarified that the Federal Government has not approved any electricity tariff increase and remains committed to protecting Nigerians, particularly vulnerable households, through continued tariff support.
Wanka explained that his earlier remarks were made during a presentation at the Asharami Square 3.0 event held in Lagos on July 22, 2026, where he discussed investment opportunities in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
According to him, the presentation focused on the Federal Government’s long-term power sector reforms and how they have created new opportunities for investors across the electricity value chain, not on any proposed tariff increase.
The statement read:
“There is no planned tariff hike for any grid consumer across any service band. The government remains committed to protecting vulnerable households through continued tariff support.”
The Special Adviser’s comments were made during a presentation at the Asharami Square 3.0 event, where he addressed investment opportunities in the power sector and how the Federal Government’s reform programme has opened new avenues for investors across the power value chain.”
Wanka also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the National Integrated Electricity Policy, which was finalised in December 2024 and approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2025.
The clarification comes amid growing public concern following reports suggesting that another electricity tariff hike was imminent.
