The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has handed information and items recovered from the scene of the death of a final-year student to the police as investigation into the incident begins.
The deceased, identified as Oluwole Oluwaseun, was a final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
OAU said Oluwaseun was found in an emergency situation at an apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife, on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
According to the university, it received information about the incident at about 1:30 p.m., prompting its Quick Response and Security Team to immediately move to the location.
The Nigeria Police Force was subsequently contacted, while officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joined the university’s security personnel at the scene.
Oluwaseun was later taken to the university’s Health Centre, where a medical doctor certified him dead.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the institution was concerned about the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
“The university is deeply concerned by the circumstances surrounding the death and has handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police for further investigation,” the statement said.
The university confirmed that the police had commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Reports have alleged that the student died by suicide, but the university has urged members of the institution’s community to avoid speculation and the spread of unverified information while the investigation continues.
The development has thrown students in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering into mourning, with the students’ association describing Oluwaseun’s death as a painful loss.
The Association of Materials Science and Engineering Students, OAU, said students had been looking forward to completing their academic journey with him.
The association extended its condolences to Oluwaseun’s family, friends and loved ones, urging members to support the family during the period of grief.
Meanwhile, OAU management has appealed to students experiencing emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek help from trusted persons and appropriate university support structures.
The university said it remained committed to the welfare of its students and staff, stressing that no student should feel compelled to confront overwhelming difficulties alone.
It added that further information would be released through official channels where necessary as the police investigation progresses.
