The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, has raised concern over what he described as the growing moral decadence in Nigeria, urging public relations practitioners to deploy their expertise in addressing the trend.
Ojajuni made the call on Friday while receiving members of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Ogun State chapter, at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
Describing PR professionals as critical agents of social change, the police boss said their training and influence placed them in a strategic position to drive moral reorientation and promote ethical values across society.
He blamed the rising indiscipline, particularly among youths, on what he termed parental negligence and broader societal failure, stressing the need for families to reclaim their role in instilling discipline.
“There is a serious moral crisis in our society. Many parents have abdicated their responsibilities, and values are no longer being passed to the younger generation. We must correct this trend and enforce discipline where necessary,” he said.
Ojajuni urged PR practitioners to intensify efforts in combating social vices through sustained advocacy, ethical communication, and youth-focused enlightenment campaigns.
He also pledged to strengthen collaboration between the police and the institute in promoting responsible citizenship and national development.
Other senior officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Bolanle Muritala; Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration), Ibrahim Abdul; and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Administration), Olu Moore Akinmoladun, echoed the CP’s position.
They emphasised the need for stronger partnerships between government institutions and PR professionals to rebuild Nigeria’s image, while advocating value-based upbringing and the introduction of social clubs in schools to nurture responsible behaviour from an early stage.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NIPR in Ogun State, Oluwaseun Boye, said the visit was to congratulate Ojajuni on his appointment and commend his service record in the Nigeria Police Force.
Boye also highlighted the chapter’s activities, including the hosting of the 2024 Nigerian Public Relations Week in Abeokuta, annual colloquium, professional trainings, and mentorship initiatives for young practitioners.
The visit ended with a tour of key departments within the command, including the Gateway Shield unit, which handles emergency security complaints from members of the public through a toll-free line.
