Authorities in Rivers State have taken fresh steps to restore calm following the renewed tension between the Okrika and Eleme communities that erupted on Thursday, July 2, along the Eleme/Okrika axis.
The violence, which eyewitnesses linked to a long-running land dispute, reportedly involved sporadic gunfire, the burning of a Hilux vehicle, and damage to other property. While some residents claimed that two persons were missing, the Rivers State Police Command said it had not confirmed any casualties and had launched an investigation into the incident.
In response to the situation, a high-level peace meeting was held at the office of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
The meeting brought together the Chairmen of Okrika and Eleme Local Government Areas, Hon. Akuro Tobins and Hon. Obarilomate Ollor, alongside senior security officials, traditional rulers, and other key stakeholders.
According to information released after the meeting, participants reviewed the circumstances surrounding the incident and discussed practical measures aimed at preventing another outbreak of violence.
Discussions focused on strengthening security across the affected areas, encouraging dialogue between both communities, and improving collaboration among government authorities, security agencies, and traditional institutions.
The stakeholders collectively reaffirmed their commitment to preserving peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that law and order prevail in both local government areas.
The peace meeting comes as security agencies continue investigations into the cause of the renewed hostilities, which have been linked to a longstanding land dispute between the neighbouring communities. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions while efforts toward a lasting resolution continue.
