Osun 2026: NANS urges closure of tertiary institutions over tension

The South West Zone D of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the temporary suspension of academic activities in tertiary institutions in Osun State until after the 2026 governorship election.

The Zonal Coordinator, Kayode Adeyemo, said this when he addressed a news briefing on Friday in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

He said the call was a precautionary measure to protect the lives of students.

Adeyemo said host communities where tertiary institutions are located had witnessed rising political tension and incidents of violence, necessitating proactive steps to ensure student safety.

He said that until a more stable security environment is restored, tertiary institutions in the state should be temporarily shut.

He said: “This recommendation is neither political nor partisan. 

“It is not intended to interfere with the statutory powers of institutional authorities or the government.

“Rather, it is a precautionary measure made solely in the interest of protecting lives.

“Academic calendars can be reviewed. 

“Lectures can be rescheduled. 

“Examinations can be postponed. 

“But the life of a student cannot be replaced.

“We would rather take preventive action today than mourn avoidable losses tomorrow.”

Adeyemo said the association had communicated its concerns to relevant authorities responsible for security, public order, and administration of tertiary institutions.

“Our objective has never been confrontation; it is to ensure that every student in Osun is adequately protected throughout the election period,” he said.

He called on the state government, security agencies, and managements of tertiary institutions to engage with the association within seven days on the concerns raised and measures required to safeguard students before, during and after the election.

He said: “We believe dialogue remains the most responsible path. 

“However, dialogue must produce action.

“Should there be no meaningful engagement or satisfactory response within this period, NANS South-West Zone D, in consultation with recognised student leaders across the state, will commence lawful, peaceful, and democratic actions to protect students’ lives, welfare and constitutional rights.”

Adeyemo urged students to remain peaceful, vigilant, and law-abiding.

He added: “Exercise your constitutional rights responsibly. 

“Collect your Permanent Voter Card, vote your conscience, and participate peacefully in the democratic process.

“But do not allow yourselves to be used for violence or unlawful activities.”

The student leader also appealed to political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully and shun violence.

Adeyemo urged security agencies to carry out their duties with professionalism, impartiality, and respect for citizens’ rights.

He said: “Our position is clear. 

“We are non-partisan. 

“We stand only for the safety, welfare, and future of Nigerian students.

“No election is worth the life of a single student.”
