Spain booked their place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 3-0 win over Austria, ending a 16-year wait for a knockout-stage win in the men’s tournament.
The European champions dominated the encounter in Los Angeles and were rewarded with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal, Pedro Porro and another late strike from Oyarzabal.
The victory also ensured Spain maintained an impressive defensive record, becoming only the second team after Mexico to keep clean sheets in each of their opening four matches at the tournament.
Spain’s pressure pays off
Spain controlled possession from the opening whistle and gradually wore down an Austrian side making its first World Cup knockout appearance since 1954.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 36th minute when Marc Cucurella delivered a low cross into the penalty area, allowing Oyarzabal to guide the ball home from close range.
Spain had earlier thought they had taken the lead through Cucurella, but the goal was ruled out after Pau Cubarsi was judged to have fouled goalkeeper Alexander Schlager during the build-up.
Schlager kept Austria in the contest before half-time with several impressive saves, first denying Oyarzabal before producing a brilliant double stop by tipping Alex Baena’s free-kick onto the crossbar and blocking Lamine Yamal’s follow-up effort.
Comfortable finish seals progress
Austria struggled to recover after the break as Spain continued mounting pressure.
The second goal arrived in the 66th minute after a patient passing move ended with Baena delivering a cross for right-back Porro, who timed his run perfectly to head beyond Schlager.
Spain completed the scoring in the closing stages when Cucurella threaded an accurate pass through the Austrian defence for Oyarzabal, who calmly slotted home his fourth goal of the tournament.
Austria’s best opportunity came when substitute Sasa Kalajdzic headed over the crossbar shortly after entering the match.
The result sends Spain confidently into the next round as they continue their pursuit of a second World Cup title, while Austria’s campaign ends after an encouraging return to the tournament’s knockout stage.
