The Pantamiyyah Movement has rejected the alleged adoption of a “consensus” arrangement for the governorship and other elective positions in Gombe State, describing the process as a violation of established legal provisions and party guidelines.
In a statement posted via the official Facebook account of former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, on Sunday, and signed by Professor Suleiman Mohammed on behalf of supporters of Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, the group maintained that no valid consensus could be reached without the involvement and written consent of all cleared aspirants.
It noted that several aspirants had already purchased and completed their expression of interest and nomination forms, making any unilateral declaration unacceptable.
The group cited relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 (Nigeria), stressing that political parties are limited to either consensus or direct primaries in selecting candidates.
It explained that consensus is only valid where all aspirants voluntarily agree in writing to step down, adding that the refusal of any aspirant automatically requires the conduct of direct primaries.
Describing the development as contrary to party directives and the position of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the movement warned that such actions could undermine internal democracy. It, however, urged its supporters to remain calm and law-abiding.
The statement added that the group is preparing for direct primaries while its legal team reviews the situation and addresses concerns, including alleged irregularities in the party’s membership database in the state.
