Police arrest two over killing of NYSC member in Benue

Police in Benue State have taken two suspects into custody following the killing of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Mr Benjamin Msughaondo.

The corps member was allegedly attacked by a mob over a false motorcycle theft allegation.

The incident reportedly happened late Sunday night around the Major settlement area close to the Buruku Local Government Secretariat.

Confirming the development on Friday in Makurdi, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Edet Udeme, said the corps member was accused by some individuals of stealing a motorcycle before he was beaten to death without any verification.

According to her, initial investigations have shown that the claim against the victim was untrue, as documents recovered proved he was the legitimate owner of the motorcycle.

She noted that while two persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, efforts are ongoing to track down another suspect who is currently on the run.

“He was wrongly accused of stealing a motorcycle, and without verifying the claim, he was mobbed to death,” Udeme said.

The police spokesperson assured that authorities are intensifying efforts to apprehend other fleeing suspects and ensure that everyone involved in the act faces justice.
