Police authorities in Ebonyi have started an investigation into officers’ assault of a civilian in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which gained public attention after images circulated online, occurred in the early hours of Monday and involved personnel attached to the Ohaukwu Police Division of Ebonyi State.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi Police Command, Joshua Ukandu, said the officers had been identified and detained.
Ukandu disclosed that upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi, Hope Okafor, ordered the immediate transfer of the officers to the Command Headquarters.
He quoted Okafor as also directing the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to commence a thorough investigation into the matter.
The police assured that the officers will face appropriate disciplinary procedures based on the outcome of the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Ebonyi Police Command has expressed sympathy to the victim, who is currently receiving medical treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA).
The police assured the public that the investigation will be conducted transparently and without bias.
The Command’s zero-tolerance stance on brutality and misconduct emphasises its commitment to upholding professionalism, accountability, and the fundamental rights of all citizens.
