Portugal Suspends Ronaldo Over National Team Camp Exit

Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) as its disciplinary body investigates his departure from the national team’s training camp in September.

The federation’s Disciplinary Council confirmed the decision in a statement reported by Portuguese public broadcaster RTP on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

According to the statement, the council decided on October 9 to open disciplinary proceedings against the Portugal captain following reports submitted to it on October 7 concerning the circumstances of his departure.

The federation said it had imposed a provisional suspension on the forward, although the final outcome of the disciplinary process remains undecided.

The case was referred to the FPF’s Disciplinary Investigation Commission on October 10 and classified as urgent.

The federation also said details of the proceedings would remain confidential until the investigation was concluded.

Portuguese sports broadcaster SPORT TV also reported the suspension on Saturday, reproducing the federation’s disciplinary statement.

Ronaldo Apologises For Camp Exit

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on September 30 following a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the team.

In a report published on October 6, beIN SPORTS said the 40-year-old had apologised for leaving the camp and indicated that he would accept any punishment imposed on him.

“I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine,” Ronaldo said in a statement quoted by the broadcaster, apologising to his national team teammates.

The Al-Nassr forward also ruled out retiring from international football and expressed his willingness to return to the national team after serving any suspension imposed on him.

RTP similarly reported that Ronaldo had indicated his readiness to return to Portugal’s squad.

The latest decision by the federation is provisional and does not represent a final determination of the case.

The disciplinary authorities have yet to announce the outcome of their investigation or specify any further sanctions the Portugal captain could face.

Ronaldo remains one of Portugal’s most prominent players, having captained the national team through several major international tournaments.

The outcome of the proceedings could determine the circumstances under which he returns to international duty, although the federation has not disclosed a timeline for completing the investigation.
