Rainstorms and windstorms have claimed nine lives and forced 4,524 people from their homes across eight local government areas of Kano State between January and August 2026.
The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Isyaku Kubarachi, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen.
According to him, 49 other residents suffered various degrees of injuries in the disasters recorded during the eight-month period.
“A total of nine persons lost their lives, 49 were injured and 4,524 others were displaced as a result of windstorm/rainstorm between January and August 2026,” Kubarachi said.
The affected local government areas are Gaya, Ajingi, Rimin Gado, Minjibir, Kabo, Bichi, Shanono and Kibiya.
Bichi recorded the highest number of victims with 775, followed by Minjibir with 712 and Kibiya with 630. Shanono recorded 530 victims, while Ajingi had 415.
Gaya recorded 342 affected persons, Rimin Gado 233 and Kabo 102.
Kubarachi said rainstorms and windstorms accounted for the largest number of victims among the six major disasters recorded in the state during the period under review.
He said SEMA had conducted assessments of the affected communities and forwarded comprehensive reports to the state government to facilitate assistance to the victims.
“The agency had compiled comprehensive reports and submitted them to the state government for assistance to victims. As soon as we receive relief materials, they will be distributed to them,” he said.
The latest figures come weeks after the Kano State House of Assembly called on the government to provide relief materials to communities affected by rainstorms and other disasters.
The lawmakers adopted a motion of urgent public importance on July 29, sponsored by the member representing Bichi Constituency, Lawan Shehu.
The motion was considered during plenary presided over by the Speaker of the House, Jibril Falgore.
