Etimbuk Sunday reportedly died earlier this month at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Enugu State, following the treatment administered to him, the subsequent deterioration of his condition and an alleged delay in referring him to a hospital for further medical attention.
The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Etimbuk Sunday, at the Corps Orientation Camp in Enugu State, following concerns raised by a lawmaker about the medical care he received before his death.
The move comes after the Senate earlier called for an investigation into the incident, while the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has begun investigating the death, including allegations concerning the medicines administered to the deceased.
Mr Daniel, the immediate past President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Akwa Ibom State University, reportedly fell ill at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Awgu, Enugu State, in early October.
PREMIUM TIMES reported that he first visited the camp clinic on 7 October with symptoms suggestive of malaria or typhoid. He reportedly received treatment and was discharged with oral medication however, his condition subsequently deteriorated.
Moving the motion, Mr Idem, who is also the chairman of the House Committee on Public Procurement, said Mr Sunday died on 11 October after reportedly falling ill during his orientation programme.
He raised concerns about the treatment administered to the corps member, the subsequent deterioration of his condition and an alleged delay in referring him to a hospital for further medical attention.
He called for an independent investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and determine whether appropriate medical procedures were followed.
The lawmaker also raised concerns over reports that Mr Sunday’s body was handed over to his family naked and with visible bruises, describing the circumstances surrounding the release of the body as requiring further investigation.
He urged the House to ensure that the allegations were thoroughly examined to establish the facts, provide answers to the bereaved family and determine whether any wrongdoing occurred.
Following the adoption of the motion, the House mandated its Committees on Youth Development, Health Care Services, Police Affairs and Human Rights to conduct a joint investigation and submit their findings within four weeks.
The committees are expected to examine the medical care provided to Mr Sunday, the reported deterioration of his condition, the alleged delay in hospital referral and the circumstances surrounding the release of his body to his family.
