Wayne Rooney has rejected speculation that he relied on weight-loss injections to achieve his slimmer appearance, while revealing that his wife, Coleen, encouraged him to have surgery on his nose.
The former England captain, 40, said he had been putting in considerable effort to lose weight through exercise after claims surfaced suggesting he had been using weight-loss medication.
Speaking ahead of the release of the couple’s new Disney+ series, The Real Rooneys, Rooney laughed off the claims.
“It’s a shame, because I’m working really hard to lose weight,” he said.
The former Manchester United striker also clarified that his recent nose operation was not mainly motivated by cosmetic concerns.
Rooney explained that he had broken his nose twice during his playing career and eventually decided to undergo surgery after experiencing problems breathing through one side of his nose.
“I couldn’t blow one side out of my nose and so I had it fixed,” he said.
Coleen revealed that she had urged her husband to undergo the procedure, partly because of his snoring.
“I tried to get him to do it because of his snoring,” she said.
Rooney suffered his first broken nose while playing for Manchester United against Preston North End in an FA Cup match in 2015.
He later sustained another broken nose while representing DC United against Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer.
The former footballer said he had delayed the surgery for several years before eventually deciding to have the procedure after the 2026 World Cup.
He later disclosed on his Stick to United podcast that he was recovering from the operation and had plastic tubes inserted in his nose to help with the healing process.
Rooney’s remarks come as he and Coleen prepare to launch The Real Rooneys, a 10-part Disney+ documentary series that offers viewers an inside look into their family life and careers.
The series follows the couple and their four sons, Kai, 16, Klay, 13, Kit, 10, and Cass, eight, during a period in which Rooney moved away from football management and expanded his work in the media.
The documentary premiered on Disney+ on Thursday.
