A heartbreaking incident in Onitsha, Anambra State, has triggered widespread outrage after a man was allegedly beaten mercilessly over a theft accusation that was later discovered to be false.
According to reports, the man was accused of stealing money and was immediately subjected to a brutal mob attack. Despite repeatedly insisting that he was innocent and even swearing with the lives of his mother and siblings that he had no hand in the alleged theft, those around him reportedly ignored his pleas.
The victim was allegedly beaten black and blue before any proper investigation was conducted, leaving many questioning the growing culture of jungle justice in the country.
The shocking twist came afterward when Sampson Iko Nweke, Chairman of the Human Rights Defenders (HURIDE), Ebonyi State chapter, revealed that the allegation had been investigated and the victim was confirmed to be innocent. Watch video
Condemning the incident, Mr. Nweke described the assault as a painful example of the dangers of acting on unverified accusations.
“See what Igbo brothers did to a fellow brother over a mere unverified accusation of theft. Now, it has been confirmed the guy didn’t steal the money after receiving this level of jungle treatment. Stop jungle justice, especially over minor issues. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. This guy must seek redress immediately. Who knows him, please?” he stated.
The incident has sparked intense reactions online, with many Nigerians demanding justice for the victim and calling for those responsible to be identified and prosecuted. Others have urged human rights organizations and legal practitioners to help the man seek compensation for the physical, emotional, and psychological trauma he reportedly endured.
