Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura has been declared winner of the All Progressives Congress rerun senatorial primary for Zamfara North after polling 49,176 votes in the result announced by the party’s primary election committee.
His closest challenger, Tijjani Yahaya Kaura, polled 9,628 votes, while Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi secured 2,602 votes, according to the result announced by the Chairman of the APC Zamfara North Senatorial District Primary Election Committee, Dr Auwal Abdullahi Aliyu.
The figures gave Ya’u a winning margin of 39,548 votes over Tijjani.
Announcing the result in Gusau following the rerun held on Monday, Aliyu said Ya’u had satisfied the requirements of the law, the APC constitution and the party’s electoral guidelines.
“Having satisfied the requirements of the law and guidelines of the APC, Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u is hereby declared the winner of the Zamfara North Senatorial District primary election,” he said.
The fresh primary followed a legal challenge to the APC’s earlier exercise. The Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto upheld an order directing the party to conduct another primary after Shinkafi challenged the previous exercise over alleged irregularities.
The rerun, however, became the subject of fresh controversy after a separate returning officer announced a different result declaring Tijjani Yahaya Kaura winner.
Under the parallel result, Tijjani was credited with 16,758 votes, while Sahabi Ya’u was said to have polled 1,465 votes and Shinkafi 1,447 votes.
The conflicting declarations have created uncertainty over the final outcome of the exercise pending an authoritative resolution by the APC leadership and relevant electoral authorities.
The result announced by the APC committee chaired by Aliyu showed Ya’u winning across the four local government areas comprising Zamfara North.
According to the breakdown, he polled 21,689 votes in Kaura Namoda, 19,017 in Zurmi, 3,815 in Shinkafi and 4,655 in Birnin Magaji.
Tijjani secured 6,586 votes in Kaura Namoda, 280 in Zurmi, 2,087 in Shinkafi and 675 in Birnin Magaji, while Shinkafi recorded 150, 386, 1,208 and 858 votes respectively. Those figures give Shinkafi a total of 2,602 votes.
The development has again brought attention to internal divisions within the Zamfara APC as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Some party supporters have called for reconciliation and a more inclusive approach to managing disagreements within the party, arguing that unity would be crucial to its electoral preparations.
For now, however, the emergence of parallel declarations means the final status of the Zamfara North APC ticket may require further clarification by the party.
